Place Names
This website has now been updated with explanations of the origin and meaning of the place names featured in the article I write for each landscape photograph. The following changes have been implemented.
Firstly, the article for each photograph has been extended to detail the origin and meaning of each place name mentioned in the article.
Secondly, the main menu has a new item 'North-west Highland Place Names' which details the sources of information I referred to when researching place name origin and meanings. I am not a scholar of place name origins and meanings and I have relied on authoritative sources wherever possible.
Thirdly, place name lists have been created listing all place names mentioned throughout this website, their origin and meaning, and for each the sources referred to. These lists can be accessed via the new main menu item 'North-west Highland Place Names'.
Finally, this has been a rather large update and has impeded the addition of new photographs. However I felt that place names, some even originating in pre-history, are an important part of the landscape, revealing it's character as seen by the original settlers. However, there are some place names that remain mysterious to this day and may never be understood.
Inevitably the introduction of so much new content may be accompanied by some errors. All this new content is now being reviewed to remove them, this may take a little while and if anyone spots any errors I will be happy to hear from them.
