On leaving Wester Ross and heading north along the Scottish north-west coast to Sutherland we enter a land with a quite different character. Whereas landscape photographs of Wester Ross are typically crowded with mountains and well endowed with trees, Sutherland has a more severe aspect.
Here the land can be a treeless wilderness for miles around, and instead of mountains crushed together, here they have a more solitary nature, rising alone. Yet Sutherland is a magnificent landscape, and all the visitors who stop at Ullapool miss out on a land like no other in the United Kingdom.
