I had been commissioned to create a particular view of Gairloch to include the mountains as seen from Lonemore. This was to be a gift from a wife to her husband and the need to keep this secret complicated the discussions that were necessary from time to time.
The viewpoint is only about 30 minutes by car from my home so one would think achieving the lighting desired would not be much of a problem. Unfortunately conditions in areas not far apart on the North-west Highlands can be quite different, and change rapidly. I had two failed attempts at this particular view, failures because by the time I arrived here the good light present when I left home was gone on arriving here.
However on the third occasion I could hardly believe my eyes at the sight of the beautiful cloud patterns over the area to be photographed, not only beautiful, but pointing directly to the distant mountains. Occasions like this are ample compensation for the inevitable disappointments that are the lot of the landscape photographer.
Of course I milked the scene for all it was worth but it was this shot, the first of the sequence I took, that was my own favourite. No doubt some of the others will appear on this website at some point in the future.
North-west Highland Place Names
The landscape of the North-west Highlands and the Gaelic language are intimately connected. Other languages have contributed to the richness of our place names, notably Norse, but the North-west Highlands have for centuries been a Gaelic landscape. In listing the meanings of place names I have relied on authoritative sources wherever possible. For further information about sources please refer to North-west Highland Place Names in the main menu.
Gairloch; Gaelic, village named after the loch of the same name, Loch Gairloch, An Gearr-loch, the short loch.
Lonemore; Part of Gairloch. Gaelic; an Lòn Mór meaning the great damp meadow.
