This image of Loch Ewe and the Isle of Ewe illustrates the really spectacular sunsets that we have in the Scottish West Highlands from time to time. This particular one arrived on a summer's evening, and it had not yet developed when Isabel and I reached this spot as we were driving back from Gairloch. It seemed to me that the clouds could give rise to a good sunset (my predictions in this regard usually fail!) and that the sun would drop down right behind the Isle of Ewe. Deciding to take a landscape photograph I parked in the nearest lay-by and walked back to this point on the hill with my gear to set up and wait.
It developed into a sunset far more spectacular than I could have imagined, as if the sky was on fire. It was incredibly exciting, as it always is when you have your camera and you are witness to spectacular lighting effects. All in, I stayed at this spot for an hour waiting on the sunset to develop, watching as it increased in vibrancy, uncertain about when it had reached its peak, continued to watch and photograph as it waned, and finally packed up when only memories were left.
Even as it waned it was producing super images, of which the above is one. At one point the entire underside of the cloud was lit up turning brilliant red, orange and yellow, but as the sun dropped further and further the extent of cloud illuminated diminished, as in this shot, making a wonderful contrast with the dark blue of the unlit cloud base.
This was shot on film and I 'enjoyed' the anticipation of waiting to see the results, but now that I've converted to digital I would not like to go back to the days of 'anticipation'!
