This was taken in early February during a visit to Loch Carron on the Scottish west coast specifically to get some landscape photographs of the area. The weather began to change and the clear skies had now filled up pretty well with clouds.
While there was still some good light I got this nice shot of the clouds reflected in Loch Carron from a viewpoint on a hill on the south side of the loch near Attadale. This was early in the morning, and although I stayed in the area for the rest of the day few other opportunities came my way.
However, as I usually do in these circumstances, I used the time to do reconnaissance for landscapes to be obtained the next time I was in this general area. It so happened that I found a really nice spot from which to take landscape photos of the Plockton area.
I didn't know it at the time, but when I next came down to take landscapes from that viewpoint I was to be presented with some of the North-west Highlands' most striking combinations of weather and light.
North-west Highland Place Names
The landscape of the North-west Highlands and the Gaelic language are intimately connected. Other languages have contributed to the richness of our place names, notably Norse, but the North-west Highlands have for centuries been a Gaelic landscape. In listing the meanings of place names I have relied on authoritative sources wherever possible. For further information about sources please refer to North-west Highland Place Names in the main menu.
Attadale; At Loch Carron. Possibly Norse from at-dalr, fight dale. Professor Watson says that the Norsemen were fond of horse fights, hesta at and this level strath would be good for that purpose.
Loch Carron; Named after the River Carron which enters this sea loch after a course through Glen-carron and Strath-carron. In Gaelic it is Loch Carrann, Carrann meaning ‘rough’. The root is kars-, rough, as seen in
Plockton; The Gaelic name is Ploc Loch Aillse meaning ‘the lump of Lochalsh’ this due to the humpy promontory which ends in Rudha-mór.
