Image Details

It was a dull damp day with intermittent showers of fine rain and I wandered into a forested area at Glen Kerry. This is an old forest with a mix of trees, trackless, with rough ground and I thought I might find some interesting images.

However I found pleasing images hard to find and considered leaving. Then I noticed that I was standing next to a very attractive patch of moss. The moss in this image is only a few centimetres wide and each moss rosette only a few millimetres wide.

I've searched on the internet to try and identify what kind of moss this is but without success. I'd welcome enlightenment so that I can give this beautiful moss it's proper name.

North-west Highland Place Names

The landscape of the North-west Highlands and the Gaelic language are intimately connected. Other languages have contributed to the richness of our place names, notably Norse, but the North-west Highlands have for centuries been a Gaelic landscape. In listing the meanings of place names I have relied on authoritative sources wherever possible. For further information about sources please refer to North-west Highland Place Names in the main menu.

Glen Kerry; Gaelic is Gleann Chearraidh derived from the Norse kjarr-á meaning ‘copse’, this continues to be an excellent description of the landscape at this place.
