Image Details

Nearing the end of our tour in this gallery, we come to Rubha Reidh Lighthouse on the Scottish North West coast. I photographed this fine landscape view on a bright and fresh Sunday morning when all seemed right with the world. This lighthouse was built in 1910 by the engineers David and Charles Stevenson, cousins of Robert Louis Stevenson. There was no road to this remote place then, and materials were brought in by boats.

Later a road was built, in 1962, and this is a narrow stretch of single-track road which one should take at leisure. Driving along this road always gives me the impression that I am the last human being left on earth, and that the road goes on forever. However, from Melvaig, beyond which there are no more houses, the road is only 5 kilometres long.

The lighthouse was fully automated in 1986, and the original lens that had been installed in the lighthouse is now on display at the Gairloch Heritage Museum. There are fine walks from here around the coast, affording spectacular views to Skye, the Hebridean Islands on clear days, the hills of Sutherland, as well as the fine local coastal scenery such as at Camus Mor only 1km from the lighthouse.

This was a 'snatched' photograph, having over an hour to spare while in Gairloch, I just had time to come out and get this image.
