Many visitors to the North-west Highlands will ask how we cope with the winter weather, imagining that we are permanently snowbound, else suffering hurricanes and horizontal rain, all combined with short winter days with just a few hours of daylight. The assumption is that while spring, summer and autumn are very nice here, winter will have us all in a deep depression and we are asked how we manage to deal with it. Nothing could be further from the truth!

Unfortunately scenes such as the above are all too rare, and since I came to live here in 1993 have been becoming less frequent. Winters are warmer and snow, except on the mountain tops, is infrequent. Days such as illustrated above are a joy and offer many opportunities for wonderful images. This view was taken from the roadside above the old ruined chapel at Laide, looking along the southern shore of Gruinard Bay to the magnificent An Teallach.

Returning to the theme of what we do up here in the winter; well I think our lives are pretty much like others who live in more populous areas. Our lives are full of events, work, responsibilities and activities that keep us busy. Where we differ from our more suburban cousins is in the community spirit we enjoy here. It is very strong and we all know people for miles around. When I lived in suburbia I hardly knew the people that stayed round about, but not so here. This is a great place to live!
