Image Details

This was one of the first images I took after coming to live in Wester Ross. It was a January morning and I had been scouring Mellon Udrigle beach for images. On the way back to the car, which I had parked nearby, my eye was caught by this dilapidated hulk of a boat abandoned on the grassy bank next to the beach.

After seeing the first print of this image it seemed to my imagination that the boat, although no longer seaworthy, was 'sailing' on the snow, hence the title.

North-west Highland Place Names

The landscape of the North-west Highlands and the Gaelic language are intimately connected. Other languages have contributed to the richness of our place names, notably Norse, but the North-west Highlands have for centuries been a Gaelic landscape. In listing the meanings of place names I have relied on authoritative sources wherever possible. For further information about sources please refer to North-west Highland Place Names in the main menu.

Mellon Udrigle; A hybrid Gaelic/Norse place name meaning ‘Udrigle's Hill’. Udrigle is possibly a Norse name, however Professor Watson suggests it may be derived from the Norse útargill, meaning outer cleft or gully.
