Image Details

In order to work of the excesses of the previous day, Christmas day, I took myself a walk on a wonderfully bright and crisp Boxing day. I headed off in the direction of Laide Jetty, about ten minutes walk, to explore the shoreline.

On reaching the jetty I noticed the receding tide had left a pool before the old fishing station and I walked round it till it was reflected in it.

I intend to visit our local museum to obtain a detailed history of the fishing stations that are found all around the Scottish coasts, and in particular the history of the Laide fishing station and add an article to this website.

As far as I know at present the Laide fishing station was in use up till around 1991 and caught salmon by means of nets. Not far from the fishing station was the ice house where the salmon were packed and made ready for shipping.

To the right of this photograph are the remains of two of the many poles that were used to hang the nets on. The poles were higher than shown here and these two remaining poles have been cut down at some point.

At the bottom of this page there is a link to an article giving details of the history of Scotland West Highland fishing stations with particular reference to Laide fishing station.

North-west Highland Place Names

The landscape of the North-west Highlands and the Gaelic language are intimately connected. Other languages have contributed to the richness of our place names, notably Norse, but the North-west Highlands have for centuries been a Gaelic landscape. In listing the meanings of place names I have relied on authoritative sources wherever possible. For further information about sources please refer to North-west Highland Place Names in the main menu.

Laide; In Gaelic it is An Leathad meaning ‘a slope’.
